Welcome message by the host

Dear friends, dear colleagues,

I feel truly honoured and privileged to be able to welcome, on behalf of Local Organising Committee, all of the EWRS members as well as non-members to the 18th EWRS symposium for the first time to Ljubljana – the geographical, cultural, scientific, economic and political centre of Slovenia.
The organisation of the symposium belongs to the most prominent events that we are preparing in the year 2018, in which the Agricultural institute of Slovenia celebrates its 120th anniversary.

Over the last months, the Local Organizing Committee together with the EWRS Scientific/Programme Committee have been working hard to finalise everything to ensure an enjoyable and scientifically stimulating event.
I am pleased to announce that more than 300 abstracts have been submitted and that until now more than 250 participants from 40 countries have been registered. These facts clearly show the sustained interest of scientists from Europe and from elsewhere in the symposium’s topic. I thank to all of you who decided to participate in the symposium, while an additional gratitude goes to those of you who provided valuable contributions to the programme.

Having read the abstracts, we can certainly conclude that weed research remains very challenging and attractive scientific eld. We are aware that topics related to weed control and ecology have no longer been purely internal matter of individual countries. Many of the problems and risks in this very broad area are global and for this reason they require not only regional, but also European as well as global approach and, therefore, intensive collaboration. Hence, it is most encouraging to see such highly qualified participants whose attendance is a clear sign of the event’s excellent professionality.

The Symposium is organised under the patronage of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, as well as of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia, together with our supporters and sponsors. I would like to express our grateful acknowledgements to all of them for their support and financial contribution.

Now, we all look forward to the start of the Symposium, and we truly hope that it will be an exciting week, providing you with both, intellectual excitement and a memorable experience.

ANDREJ SIMONČIČ
President of the Local Organising Committee
